Recently, we Running with Mascara Editors received a few sample bags of Rhythm Superfoods Kale Chips to taste! The first thing we all thought was “what the heck is a kale chip?” We didn’t know what to expect! Find out what we thought of these raw snacks after the jump.
Here’s some background info on the chips, courtesy of their website:
“Rhythm Kale Chips are the evolution of the standard chip. Each 2 oz bag of Rhythm Kale Chips starts out as a whole bunch of garden fresh kale. We then mix it with one of our hand-crafted dressings made from a perfect blend of fresh vegetables, cashews, juices, herbs & spices. Instead of baking or frying, our healthy chips are air crisped at a low temperature which maintains the RAW living enzymes and maximizes nutritional potency.”
Here’s what we thought:
Allison: I tried 3 flavors of Rhythm brand kale chips: Zesty Nacho, Bombay Curry and Kool Ranch. Not eating kale regularly, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from green chips. After opening the bag, I noticed that the “chips” more closely resembled clumps of crispy, dehydrated greens. They definitely didn’t look like your traditional chip. After tasting them, I found that I really enjoyed all three flavors. The Bombay Curry flavor was by far the most potent, but good if you enjoy curry flavor. Despite hating everything ranch-flavored, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Kool Ranch chips didn’t have an overpowering ranch taste, but a more subtle flavor, which I enjoyed. The Zesty Nacho flavored kale chips were definitely my favorite. I thought the cheesy flavoring paired perfectly with the kale. I really like that these chips offer people who don’t enjoy eating leafy greens the opportunity to still benefit from kale’s stellar nutrition. Of course nothing’s a replacement for the real thing, but substituting kale chips for your daily potato chip habit is a great way to make a simple, yet healthy, change to your diet.
Kathryn: These kale chips were unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. Crumbly, crunchy, and flavorful, they were tasty and strangely addictive. I couldn’t decide on my favorite- it was between Zesty Nacho and Kool Ranch. I didn’t love the Bombay Curry flavor. I never in a million years thought that I would be voluntarily snacking on kale, but during the work day, I found myself reaching over to grab handfuls of them. The best part is that I didn’t have to feel guilty about it! They’re extremely low in fat and calories, plus they’re loaded with essential vitamins and minerals- woo! The only thing I didn’t like was that when you got near the middle/bottom of the bag, the chips were basically crumbs. I also didn’t have the greatest breath after eating them Other than that, I’d definitely snack on these again.
Sophia: I’ve never tasted kale before so I didn’t know what to expect from these chips, but I was pleasantly surprised! Rhythm Chips knows what it’s doing! My favorite flavor was definitely the Zesty Nacho followed by the Kool Ranch and finally the Bombay Curry. The Zesty Nacho reminded me of a healthy Dorito because it was crisp and had a bit of fire in it. I would definitely buy these. The Kool Ranch was also good, and I don’t even like the taste of Ranch dressing! It was a bit saltier than the Zesty Nacho, but it fit in well with the Ranch flavoring. I didn’t like the Bombay Curry at all but that might just be because I literally hate curry. I don’t think it smells good and I think it’s too spicy. Overall, I would definitely buy the Kool Ranch and Zesty Nacho, but not the Bombay Curry. However, I do think the chips are a bit expensive, so it might just be easier to make my own kale chips!
