Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the leading breast-cancer charity, is cutting ties with Planned Parenthood. This has caused a major breach between the two long-standing women’s organizations that is linked directly to the abortion debate.

What exactly does this mean for women in need?
Planned Parenthood will be losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations that mainly came in the form of grants. These grants were primarily used for breast exams.

Planned Parenthood claims that the Komen charity is stepping down because of pressure from anti-abortion activist groups. Komen, on their end, claim that Planned Parenthood is under investigation by Congress, and their recent decision to freeze involvement with organizations that are under investigation by the authorities is what spurred these events.

This separation of the two groups is leaving many dumbfounded, disappointed and sad. Planned Parenthood said the Komen grants amounted to nearly $700,000 last year. These funds were supporting breast-cancer screening among other services for women. Social media has been abuzz with the developing story with impassioned people vehemently taking sides.
