Girl in working overalls with sax

You know, the only time I’ve ever worn overalls was when I was a farmer for Halloween in the 4th grade. I was unaware that they were ever viewed as trendy, though I know a lot of people wore them when I was growing up. But according to Yahoo!, these things are back with a vengeance. Personally, I don’t like to touch fashion topics very often, but I do have some opinions about them

First of all, I understand the practical use of overalls: they are a piece of utility clothing. They will never fall down, they’re durable, and they have pockets for all your stuff. Denim can be fashionable, but I don’t see how overalls can ever be. Celebrities like Liv Tyler, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Betsey Johnson all seem to be behind the trend.

Betsey Johnson herself said, “I love overalls. Wear them, don’t style them. It’s a very real piece of clothing. Nothing underneath, a tube top underneath, a blouse underneath. Be creative! No rules!”

Let’s address that right there. Nothing underneath? Right, if you want to look like a slob. A tube top underneath? Right, if you want to look like a slob. A blouse underneath? Right, if you want to look like a fully clothed slob. I’m not sure how overalls could ever be made fashionably.

Skinny people with model-like physiques look horrible, people with fuller figures look horrible. Men look bad in them, women look bad in them. The girl in that picture above, who’s otherwise cute, seems to be musically talented, and fond of caring for her ear health, looks frumpy.

It’s just a lazy choice to me. It’s like waking up and saying, “Oh yeah, today’s gonna be horrible. Just gonna throw on a tarp with some shoulder straps and phone it in.” Don’t get me wrong, I have those days, but when I do I wear jeans or a pair of nice sweatpants (if there is such a thing), or a matching tracksuit borrowed from Betty White.
