When you hear “80s workout routine” what comes to mind first? Is it the leotards? The legwarmers? The pastels and shag haircuts? Admit it, you’re thinking of Jane Fonda, right? But she wasn’t the only one to hit it big during the Golden Age of the aerobic workout video. Some of the decade’s brightest stars made workout videos, whether they rose from the industry or not.
When I discovered Zumba almost 3 years ago I became instantly hooked, and within two months I received my certification to teach. I had grown up taking dance classes, but when I moved away for school I stopped dancing and attended the group fitness classes at my gym. While I enjoyed working out, there was always something missing in my exercise routine. I loved dancing because it never felt like exercise. It was just fun. When I found Zumba, everything clicked. Zumba infuses some of the sexiest and most rhythmic dance steps into a high intensive cardio class. Some people may wonder how someone could even burn 600 calories salsa dancing. But let me tell you, it’s possible.
Ever heard of foam rolling? Me neither until a couple days ago! My gym recently created an hour long class dedicated to relaxing those pesky built-up muscle knots by using a foam roller. It feel like you’re giving yourself a deep tissue massage, and the best part is you can do it at home. Here are some basic exercises to try with a foam roller.
For more information on the health benefits of foam rolling check out my feature on Fit and Fab Living
Place the foam roller horizontally under your calves. Begin to extend your body forward so the foam roller moves up your calf to just under your knee, then slowly move back until the foam roller reaches just above your ankles. Repeat slowly, holding your position every couple inches or wherever feels tender. Hold for 30-60 seconds.
Position your body face down and place the foam roller horizontally under your quadriceps. Begin to extend your body forward so the foam roller moves down your thighs to just above your knee, then slowly move back until the foam roller reaches just under your pelvis. Repeat slowly, holding your position every couple inches or wherever feels tender. Hold for 30-60 seconds.
Position your body horizontally on the mat and place the foam roller under your right hip bone. Lift you legs up to deepen the exercise. Begin to slowly move your body side to side, holding your position every couple inches or wherever feels tender. Hold for 30-60 seconds. Repeat on opposite side.
Set yourself up the same way you would for an upper and lower back exercise. Now when you move to side to side twist your abdomen so your right arms meets your left and the foam roller comes just under your shoulder. Press your weight into your should while in this position and hold for 30-60 seconds. Repeat on opposite side.
I never imagined myself to take on the sport of running. With two brothers at home, my interests revolved around basketball, and yes, WWE Wrestling. But as I started high school, my parents encouraged me to let go of my WNBA dreams and give running a shot. In retrospect, I’m glad I did. Cause let’s be real, I’m no Lisa Leslie.
I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have a diligent workout routine. So when I heard about the new “7-Minute Exercise” last week I was pretty excited. Who can’t manage dedicating just seven minutes of their day to exercise, right? Without further ado, I tried it out and here’s my review.
Let me tell you, folks, it may have only lasted seven minutes, but it was quite a ride!
The 2013 Billboard Music Awards featured an all grown-up Taylor Swift in a gorgeous vibrant blue dress from designer Zuhair Murad’s Pre-Fall 2013 Ready-to-Wear Collection.
