One of my favorite pastimes is rummaging through other people’s makeup bags. Whether it’s my own friends or complete strangers, I love seeing what products other people are using and loving. Since I figured there must be others out there like me, I decided to reveal my makeup bag must-haves.

I enjoy doing these first impressions because I love trying out new products. I recently saw this primer while I was shopping at Ulta so I thought I would try it out and let you all know what I thought. I go through phases where I use a face primer, but recently I’ve found that I’ve especially been in need of one. I find that my foundation has trouble lasting all day and my face ends up looking really shiny by the afternoon. This product claims to help with shine control, and after trying out this product and seeing the improvements in my skin, I feel as though this purchase was long overdue.

Well, if being a competitive figure skater for over 15 years has taught me anything, it’s how to choose makeup. I’ll admit I’m one of those girls who tries out every new makeup product on the market (with many facial-faux pas stories to boot). The result of my obsession? My gigantic orange makeup bag chock full of things I  never wear (apparently full-on dark smoky eyes are not exactly the style for Catholic high school who knew?). I am happy to say, however, that I have come up with a system to handle my stuffed-to-the-brim orange bag.

Of the many things I love about summer a shiny, oil streaked face is certainly not one of them. My battle with shine has led me to three products that I can actually trust to control the reflecting mirror that is my forehead in the summer. Believe me I’ve tried it all, but with combination, sensitive skin it’s rather hard to find products I can trust. That is, of course, until I tried these.

Ever wished that some day they would discover a way to tan that would actually be good for you? No free radicals, no harmful UV lights, just the sun-kissed glow that we all strive for in these short summer months. Perhaps there is a solution: bronzer.  But not just any bronzer, this VMV Hypoallergenics “Tarte-à-Tan” powder works miracles for your skin.

When it comes to makeup, skepticism is usually my go to attitude. When every cosmetic label screams “NO. 1 AGE DEFYING, ANTI-WRINKLE, PORE-ERASING, SUN-PROTECTING, FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH!” it’s hard to take them seriously. But, I put my skepticism aside to try a new product by one of my favorite (and most trusted) makeup companies: Benefit Cosmetics. It’s called “the POREfessional” and I am officially hooked

My eyelids are the worst at keeping products in place. I’ll put on eyeliner or eyeshadow and within an hour, I’m already smudging like crazy. My eyelids are very oily, which sounds weird, but I’m sure some of you out there can relate. If you have this problem, then you know it’s a pain in the butt to find eye products that last all day — especially during the sweaty summer months. Lucky for you, I’ve become an expert at eye products that will wear all day. If you don’t have a smudging problem, then maybe this will help you get an idea of new products to try out this summer!

 Breaking the Sunscreen Stigma

I have heroically struggled over the last four years to change the way that I think about sunscreen. If you’re like me, the word itself brings up not only those pleasant days at the beach as a kid, but the epic battle between you and your mom every morning before you went out. In my house, the story went like this: she wanted to protect my skin from a painful burn, and I wanted that smelly, sticky, oily stuff as far away as possible. She was trying to prevent me from having a tantrum later, and I was interested in having a tantrum now. So while the sunscreen was always applied eventually (who can win against a mother with common sense on her side?) the repeated experience each summer for the first ten years of my life gave me a pretty strong bias against all sun protection related products.

During the sweaty summer months, the last thing you want is a weighed down face full of makeup. Last summer, BB Creams were all the rage for those who wanted light coverage makeup with an illuminating finish. Now, the light feel and glowing power of a beauty balm is being combined with the anti-aging properties of an anti-aging cream to form what is being called a CC cream. AA (anti-aging) plus BB (beauty balm) equals CC (color correcting). Get it?

So, what’s the real difference between a BB cream and a CC cream? Well, a CC cream provides all the benefits that a BB cream does (conceals, hydrates, evens skin tone and protects with SPF) with one added bonus. CC creams visibly reduce the appearance of dark spots, sun spots and acne scarring. It’s basically a BB cream, but with a little extra pizzazz.
