I swim all year round, but there’s something about the summer that makes me constantly want to jump in a pool – or a lake, if I’m at the beach.  For me swimming is both a workout and fun activity, although most of the swimming I do is fitness-related.  Here’s a great swimming workout if you’re interested. But I’m always looking for a reason to hang out with my younger cousins just to hang out at the pool all day.

When I first started swimming, I had no idea that I couldn’t just use my everyday soap and shampoo and conditioner. I did this for about a week and realized that no amount of scrubbing could rid that terrible chlorine smell from my hair. I remember washing my hands at least 10 times in a row and still smelling like I just got out of the pool. My skin also became extremely dry.

It’s exciting to publish a blog post about new year’s resolutions because, let’s face it, they can be hard to keep up with and once you post them, you have to commit, right? I always struggle with trying to find something that I can actually do. I can think of tons of resolutions that fell by the wayside over the years, but I can’t really think of many that I stuck with all year long.

The funny thing is that I am a very goal-oriented person, so this should be a no-brainer. In 2009, my goal was to run the Walt Disney World Marathon in January 2010. This wasn’t a New Year’s resolution, per se, since I didn’t even consider running the marathon until halfway through the summer. But it was a large goal that took up much of my free time. If I can plan and accomplish that goal, I should be able to come up with a few good new year’s resolutions.

I know it’s the dead of winter and the last thing on anyone’s mind is swimming, at least in Chicago, but swimming is actually the perfect thing to do during the winter!

Swimming is my second favorite cardio exercise – nothing can beat running. I was one of those kids who took swimming lessons for my entire kid life, and I loved it! I remember starting out in Guppies and working my way up to Sharks. After I outgrew swim lessons, though, I didn’t do much swimming, and definitely no swimming during the long winter months.

The word exercise can often elicit looks of fear and disinterest.  This is because there is a crazy notion floating around that you must look fit to exercise.   Exercise is a great way to stay healthy, but there are plenty of unfit people battling through exercise each day in attempt to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. People often give up on incorporating exercise into their daily lifestyle because they hate the gym! But who says the gym is for everyone?
