I don’t know about you, but I always feel happier after spending time outside in the sun. Whether I’m running, taking a leisurely walk or watering my plants, there’s something about breathing in the fresh air and feeling the sun’s warmth on my skin that just makes me a bit happier. If I’m having a bad day, a simple stroll around the block can be all I need to boost my spirits.

I was interested to learn that this feeling isn’t just me. Researchers at the University of Essex in the UK performed various studies on how being outside, even if only for 5 minutes, quickly boosted a person’s mood and self esteem. They found that after testing a variety of situations, including exercise, type of outside environment, and other factors that every outside scenario improved people’s happiness. And the biggest impact was felt after only 5 minutes!

Today, we’re getting to know Lauren from the healthy living blog, Run Yoga RepEAT. This busy college student is studying nutrition and dietetics and still has time to get outside and stay active as well as cooking healthy recipes! As you can probably guess from the title of her blog, she really enjoys running and yoga, although she’s been running since she was 13, so she definitely knows her stuff!

So here’s Lauren!

1. Tell us a bit about your blog?

Hey! My name’s Lauren, and I blog at Run Yoga RepEAT.

My blog covers lots of topics: recipes, healthy eating, chocolate (lots of it!), fitness, training for my next half marathon, studying nutrition, and various thoughts from my day.

Last night I came home, cooked dinner and was ready to jump onto the couch and watch television.  It was one of those days!  Just as I was heading toward the couch, I realized that my fiancé had monopolized the television—he had to decided to drag out the Wii Fit.  After 900 hundred plus days of not touching the game (the Wii Fit tells you when you last played the game), he wanted to get back into a routine of playing a little bit each day.

The other day, Allison wrote about taking her first yoga class ever! It got me to think about my own yoga experiences. Now that I’ve started working out 5 times a week, I’m trying to change up my workout so I don’t get bored. Part of that approach has to do with my favorite yoga DVD: Denise Austin – Yoga Buns. Basically, the wonderful Denise Austin leads a 30-minute workout to lift, tighten, and tone buns. That’s exactly what I needed, and I’m really feeling the after effects!

As I’ve mentioned before, I love working out! I am one of those weird people who don’t mind getting up at 5 am to get in my morning workout.  Working out allows me to challenge  myself both mentally and physically and feel awake and refreshed for the rest of the day.  I don’t necessarily love spending an hour and a half  inside a gym, but I enjoy training for something–anything that lets me work towards accomplishing a goal.  I don’t mind running on a treadmill if I am working towards training for a race, trying to improve my speed or try to make it through a grueling hill workout to improve my endurance.

But I’ve finally discovered that you don’t have to go crazy with cardio to get in a great workout!
